Subject Overview

The subject aims to provide a relevant course for students who will complete their study of chemistry at this level while, at the same time, providing a foundation course for those who will continue to study chemistry or related subjects following completion of their Leaving Certificate. The syllabus consists of approximately 70% pure chemistry; the remaining 30% deals with the social and applied aspects of chemistry.

Option 1 is taken in our school -
Additional Industrial Chemistry and Atmospheric Chemistry.
There are 28 Mandatory experiments to be carried out and recorded.

Assessment

Leaving Certificate Chemistry is assessed by means of a terminal examination paper. Students are required to keep a record of their practical work over the two years of the course.

Achievements by St. Muredach’s Chemistry Students


  • Winners of group section of Senior Chemistry, Physics and Mathematical Sciences at Young Scientists 1996 - winners of Institute of Chemistry award and Institute of Petroleum award.
  • Winners of the National Ecofest competition, 1996 and represented Ireland at the International event in Amsterdam.
  • Winner at the Irish Chemistry Olympiad, 1997 and represented Ireland at the International Chemistry Olympiad in Montreal, winning the first ever Chemistry Olympiad Medal (Silver) for Ireland.
  • Finalists in the Mobil Oil / RTE Environmental Video Awards, 1998.
  • 1997 Representing Ireland in Montreal (Noel O' Boyle)
  • 1999 Ist place in Leaving Certificate (Neil Duggan)
  • 2000 Gold Medal Winner (Fergus O' Boyle represented St. Muredach's College in Copenhagen)
  • 2002 Bronze Medal Winner (Colm Reddington)
