Materials Technology Wood

The Materials Technology Wood section of the Technological Department caters for 180 pupils in the junior cycle (at higher and ordinary levels), preparing them for the Junior Certificate.

There is an average class size of 20 with 3 teachers instructing 9 classes.

All students take part in scheduled practical work.

Assessment of Materials Technology Wood is as follows:

66 2/3 % Design Project
33 1/3 % Final Examination

Technical Graphics

The Technical Graphics section of the Technological Department caters for 180 pupils in the junior cycle (at higher and ordinary levels), preparing them for the Junior Certificate.

Architectural Technology

96 pupils take Architectural Technology at senior level in preparation for the Leaving Certificate.
There is an average class size of 24 with 3 teachers instructing 4 classes.
All students take part in scheduled practical work.

Assessment of Architectural Technology is as follows:

25 % Design Project
25 % Practical Test
50 % An Ordinary Level and Higher Level Final Examination, including a compulsory drawing question in each case.

Design & Communication Technology

The DCG section of the Technological Department caters for 48 pupils in the senior cycle (at higher and ordinary levels), preparing them for the Leaving Certificate.
There is an average class size of 19 with 2 teachers instructing 2 classes.

All students take part in scheduled practical work. There is also a strong emphasis on using modern teaching methodologies in the department:


Data projectors and computers are fully utilised in each drawing room.


Assessment of Design and Communication Technology is as follows:


40 % A student assignment. CAD will form a significant and compulsory component.

60 % Final Examination

Facilities

The Technological Department at St. Muredach’s College has a total of three rooms dedicated to the teaching of Materials Technology Wood and Architectural Technology. Each room is well maintained with modern equipment, which is updated annually. There are also two drawing rooms. Twenty four computers are located in one of the drawing rooms, solely serving the Technological Department in the teaching of Technical Graphics and Design and Communication Graphics. These are used to enhance the understanding and visualisation of various everyday solids and SolidWorks projects associated with the subjects. They can also access related websites on the Internet.
