St Muredach's Golf Society - Dublin
St Muredach's Golf Society - Dublin, was formed in 1982 following a past pupils meeting in Wynns Hotel, Dublin. The founders were: Ronnie Hopkins RIP, Pat Curley, Pearse Culkin, Kieran Duffy, Padraic Melvin, John Fergus, John Murphy, George Tracy, Sean Duggan, Gerry Munnelly, John Kennedy, Greg Collins RIP, Sean Langdon RIP, Michael Lynn, Tommy Commins, and Tom Cosgrove.
An ad hoc committee under the captaincy of Dermot O'Regan was given the task of identifying new members. Dermot and his merry band held a number of very enjoyable outings which clearly established a significant golf interest among past pupils. The first of these was at the Dublin Sports Golf Club, Kilternan and was a sight to behold with fellas arriving you had never played before - clubs sticking out of their bags the wrong way around; two playing out of some bags and chasing after their balls as if it were hurling. How we were ever allowed back there is beyond me.
Incidentally, our golf outings were never restricted to past pupils only and visitors were always welcome. A learning process for the beginners was encouraged by the more serious golfers and turning up and participating became more important than the quality of one's golf.
In 1985, the St Muredach's College Dublin PPU decided to remember the tragic loss of Pat Gibbons in an air crash, by inaugurating the Pat Gibbons Memorial Trophy. This is presented annually to the Golfer of the Year on Captain's Day Out. Pat Gibbons was a generous contributor of ours and gave up his private office in the Zhivago Nightclub for our meetings.
St Muredach's Golf Society - Dublin is looking to establish a more productive link with the present generation so they can have a society in Dublin to join for their golf and keeping in touch. You can check out their Facebook page here.
